Nelson Amo, the Executive Director of Innohub, has emphasised the critical need for more innovators to enter the agritech sector in Ghana as the country strives to address key agricultural challenges through technology and innovation.

He highlighted the sector’s potential to significantly enhance food security, despite it being in its early stages of development.

“The agritech sector in Ghana is still emerging, but the opportunities are vast. There’s a pressing need for more innovators to step in and contribute to areas like information for farmers, commercial spraying, pest control, food security, and food processing,” Amo stated during a media briefing on the sidelines of a bootcamp for 33 selected GreenTech entrepreneurs in the agricultural value chains, held last Thursday in Accra.

The bootcamp, organized by Fidelity Bank Ghana in collaboration with Innohub as part of the bank’s GreenTech Innovation Challenge (GTIC), aims to empower and scale up entrepreneurs with innovative GreenTech ideas within the agricultural sector.

Amo underscored the vital role of innovation in enhancing food security, noting that technical and financial support provided to the entrepreneurs would improve agricultural mechanisation and boost productivity.

Nana Yaa Afriyie Ofori-Koree, Head of Partnerships and Sustainability at Fidelity Bank Ghana, reiterated the importance of offering solutions to national challenges and contributing meaningfully to local economic growth. She noted that the GreenTech Innovation Challenge is designed to support entrepreneurs by providing financial assistance and mentorship.

The Scale Up Tier offers GH₵100,000 each to four businesses with established GreenTech solutions that need expansion support. The Commercialisation Tier grants GH₵200,000 to an established business with market-ready GreenTech products to amplify its reach and ensure commercial success.

This initiative is expected to have a significant impact on the agricultural sector, driving sustainable growth and contributing to Ghana’s food security goals.
