- NFRA has plans to expand its storage capacity across Tanzania using modern technologies
President Samia Suluhu Hassan has officially launched the National Food Reserve Agency’s (NFRA) new, state-of-the-art warehouses in the Kanondo area of Rukwa Region. This significant development marks a major leap forward in Tanzania’s food security efforts.
Increased Storage Capacity:
Previously, NFRA’s storage capacity in the Rukwa Region stood at 33,500 tons. With the addition of these modern facilities, the agency can now store a remarkable 58,500 tons of grains, representing a 73% increase. This translates to a 20,000-ton increase for lots and a 5,000-ton increase for warehouses.
The new warehouses are not just about increased capacity. They’re equipped with cutting-edge technology to enhance efficiency in crop handling.
This includes:
Improved ventilation systems: This ensures optimal storage conditions for various grains, minimizing spoilage.
Work tools: Tractors, scales, and elevators streamline logistical processes, allowing for faster and more efficient grain movement.

The project, initiated in July 2019, reflects the government’s commitment to food security. With a cost of approximately 14 billion shillings (roughly 6.02 million US dollars), it signifies a significant investment in the nation’s agricultural sector.
NFRA’s vision extends beyond this project. The agency plans to continue expanding its storage capacity across Tanzania, utilizing modern technologies to keep pace with the country’s growing food production.
This launch is a positive step towards a more food-secure future for Tanzania. By increasing storage capacity and implementing efficient processes, NFRA is better positioned to manage grain reserves and ensure food availability for the nation’s population.
