Acumen, a global nonprofit, has announced a bold initiative to invest $1.5 billion in small-scale farmers across the developing world. This move aims to protect these farmers, who produce a significant portion of the world’s food, from the devastating impacts of climate change.
Acumen plans to invest $300 million directly while mobilizing an additional $1.2 billion from other investors. This commitment positions Acumen as one of the largest private investors focused on climate adaptation for small-scale farmers in emerging markets.
“Smallholder farmers are disproportionately affected by climate change, and we’re not seeing enough climate investment going towards adaptation,” said Acumen’s CEO Jacqueline Novogratz. “This initiative is a significant step towards addressing this gap and empowering farmers to build resilience.”
The fund will support innovative startups in countries like Pakistan, India, Africa, and Latin America. These startups will develop and deploy technologies such as solar drying, biodigesters, and efficient irrigation systems. By investing in these solutions, Acumen aims to boost yields, increase income, and improve the livelihoods of 40 million farmers by 2030.
Acumen’s track record in sustainable agriculture includes investments in companies like Hatch Africa and SunCulture. These companies are already making a positive impact by providing access to climate-resilient technologies and practices.
This ambitious initiative aligns with the growing recognition of the critical role that small-scale farmers play in global food security. By investing in climate adaptation, Acumen is not only helping farmers but also contributing to a more sustainable and resilient food system.
