AgriTech company iFarm has begun constructing an advanced robotic vertical farm in Switzerland. The project, in partnership with Hygrow, signals iFarm’s return to the European market.
The farm, scheduled to start operations next summer, will feature a 1,031 m² cultivation area. It incorporates iFarm’s StackGrow technology, an automated system with mobile trays that optimizes vertical growing space. Robotic systems will handle planting, tray washing, and plant cutting, allowing staff to concentrate on maintenance and sanitation tasks.
iFarm’s founder and CEO, Alex Lyskovsky, commenting on recent industry challenges said, “Vertical farming in Europe faced significant hurdles. We adapted by expanding into MENA countries and Indonesia. Now, we’re excited to re-establish our European presence.”
The facility aims to produce several tons of fresh greens monthly. Thus, supplying major Swiss retail chains with a sustainable alternative to imported produce.
Furthermore, a Hygrow representative expressing enthusiasm said, “Introducing iFarm’s innovative technology to Switzerland is thrilling. We believe this sustainable approach can transform our local food system.”
Despite industry-wide challenges like high costs and energy demands, iFarm’s approach offers solutions. The farm’s automation reduces staffing needs and potentially saves $370,000 yearly in salaries. This is not only efficient but also strengthens the project’s economic viability.
