Fostering Innovation in Ghana: KIC’s 2025 AgriTech Challenge Pro

The Kosmos Innovation Center (KIC) has long been a catalyst for agricultural innovation in Ghana, and its 2025 AgriTech Challenge Pro continues this tradition. This 5-month accelerator program is meticulously designed to support early-stage AgriTech startups, providing them with the necessary tools, funding, and mentorship to refine their business ideas and scale their operations. By focusing on startups that have developed minimum viable products (MVPs) and have been operational for over three months, the program ensures that participants are primed for growth and ready to make a tangible impact on the agricultural value chain.

Program Overview and Objectives

The AgriTech Challenge Pro is tailored for teams comprising 2-4 co-founders, aged between 18 and 35, residing in Ghana. Applicants are expected to have completed tertiary education or be current tertiary students, and their business ideas must address pressing issues within the agricultural sector. A notable emphasis is placed on encouraging female-led teams to apply, reflecting KIC’s commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion within the entrepreneurial ecosystem.

The program’s core mission is to drive technological innovation to enhance productivity, improve yields, and generate employment opportunities within Ghana’s agricultural landscape. By offering comprehensive training in business development, marketing, legal documentation, and team formation, KIC ensures that participating startups are well-equipped to navigate the complexities of the agribusiness sector.

The First Pitch Event: Showcasing Groundbreaking Innovations

From March 12th to 14th, 2025, KIC hosted the First Pitch event for the 2025 AgriTech Challenge Pro. This pivotal gathering brought together 61 startups from 16 esteemed academic institutions, including the University of Ghana (UG), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), and the University of Cape Coast (UCC). These teams presented a diverse array of innovative solutions aimed at transforming various facets of the agricultural sector, from production and post-harvest processes to marketing and distribution.

The innovations showcased during the First Pitch spanned several critical areas:

  • Food Innovation and Security: Addressing challenges related to nutrition and ensuring a stable food supply.
  • Climate Technology: Developing solutions to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on agriculture.
  • Circular Economies: Promoting sustainable practices that minimise waste and maximise resource efficiency.
  • Agricultural Technology: Leveraging technology to enhance various stages of the agricultural value chain.

  • Cas-Tech Glue (Takoradi Technical University): This startup is transforming cassava byproducts into biodegradable, user-friendly, and multipurpose adhesives suitable for the wood and wallpaper industries.
  • Sunify Solardry Technology (University for Development Studies): Addressing post-harvest losses, this company is developing affordable and portable mobile solar dryers to assist rural grain farmers in preserving their produce.
  • GreeNovate Solutions (Takoradi Technical University): Specialising in eco-friendly packaging, this startup utilizes agricultural raw materials to create sustainable packaging solutions, thereby contributing to environmental sustainability.

Advancing to the Final Pitch

Following a rigorous evaluation process, 44 startups were selected to advance to the final pitch event scheduled for May 2025. This upcoming event will provide these teams with an opportunity to compete for prize money aimed at propelling their businesses forward and amplifying their impact on the agricultural value chain.
