QU Dongyu, Director-General of the FAO, recently wrapped up a visit to China focused on enhancing agrifood systems through collaboration and knowledge exchange.
His journey included stops in Guangdong, Hainan, and Chongqing, where he explored cutting-edge agricultural technology, research, and enterprises, reinforcing the FAO’s Four Betters: better production, nutrition, environment, and life.
In Guangdong, QU visited XAG, a smart agriculture company using robotics and AI to help farmers tackle challenges like rural depopulation and climate change. He also toured the Haid Group, a global agricultural enterprise promoting productivity and sustainability.

QU also explored educational and research initiatives, including the Brain & Metaverse Joint Innovation Lab at Hong Kong University and the Agricultural Genomics Institute in Shenzhen, where he discussed the role of scientific research in advancing agricultural practices.
His visit to Hainan Province focused on the FAO’s partnership with the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, aimed at improving smallholder farmers’ livelihoods in tropical regions. Through these engagements, QU underscored the importance of accessible research and innovation to address real-world agricultural challenges.
